The 33rd Symposium of the Malaysian Society for Microbiology 2016 (MSM2016) was successfully held from the 14th-17th December 2016 in the historical state of Malacca by the Malaysian Society for Microbiology (MSM) and UPM. The symposium was also jointly co-organised with various local and international universities (UKM, UM, UITM, UNMC, UiTM, UMT) institutions (MARDI, Nuclear Malaysia, FRIM) as well as scientific societies including the Asian Federation of Biotechnology-Malaysian Chapter (AFOB-MC), Malaysian Society for Lactic Acid Bacteria (MSLAB), and the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development Program (SATREPS). “Translating Microbiology to Bio-economy” was an apt theme adapted for MSM2016, which hosted a gathering of over 200 participants comprising of academicians, researchers and postgraduates from more than 20 local and international institutions. The MSM2016 was officiated by the eminent UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris. A total of 3 Keynote, 9 Plenary and 40 oral presentations were deliberated over 8 scientific sessions. The MSM2016 also saw 120 poster presentations highlighted in 8 microbiology categories. Although MSM2016 was organised as a local symposia, it was also well received by the international delegates from Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Pakistan and Nigeria.

Facilitating MSM’s aspiration to foster international cross-societal linkages, a special joint session of “Environmental Microbiology” and “Environmental Biotechnology”, as well as a special satellite symposium was concurrently organised with AFOB-MC and SATREPS respectively. A “Scientific Writing for Publication” workshop was also conducted on the 16th Dec 2016 by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) with a total of 30 participants. Preceding the MSM2016, a pre-conference workshop entitled “Basic Transcriptome Genome Informatics” was also successfully conducted from the 1st to 2nd November, 2016 at the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia in collaboration with Codon Genomics Sdn. Bhd.

To commemorate the 40th Anniversary of MSM, the MSM2016 included a special forum entitled “Celebrating 40 Years of MSM: Charting the Way Towards Greater Achievements” as well as a celebrative dinner gala with past MSM presidents and EXCO members. All in all, the MSM2016 saw a fruitful gathering of like-minded individuals who deliberated ideas and fostered networking via the platform that was successfully provided by MSM2016.
